“Having the opportunity to spend some time with this family has brightened my perspective on life. The resilience displayed by each child gives you such an appreciation for what this world has to offer.”

A life changing experience

Volunteering abroad can be a life changing experience. The opportunity to see the world, meet new people, learn about cultures and ideas to create memories that will last a lifetime.

At The GLO House, we strive to give our volunteers all of that and more. Volunteers live at The GLO House and interact directly with the children. You will have the opportunity to work with our surfing outreach, OceanHood, tutor children in our after-school program, assist in community enrichment projects, and care for the residents in our children’s home.

Not only will a trip to Cape Town impact your life, but you will also directly and meaningfully help change the lives of the children and their communities.

Whats included in your trip

  • Transport to and from the airport
  • Meals: Monday- Friday. Breakfast and dinner.
  • Residential accommodations at our children’s home or local volunteer house (depending on availability)
  • Weekend reprieves for sight-seeing and travel
  • Surfing Lessons
  • Certificate of Completion that connects you to our global community

What to expect

Our volunteers work on all of our projects. So you’ll wake up and head into the informal settlement and work in a daycare center. Your duties will include: making lunch for the children, teaching them preschool lessons, assisting in reading and art activities, coming up with new innovative ideas for teaching and getting the kids attention. After, you will be picked up for a short lunch break and the children from The GLO House will arrive home.

You will be asked to assist them in reading and homework. Depending on weather and behavior we will then take the children surfing where you will get a surf lesson from the kids and help the younger ones to swim and surf (no experience needed). You can then join us for dinner and assist with making dinner.

You will most likely be volunteering from 8am until 7pm if you decide to stay for dinner. On weekends you can either enjoy your free time to explore the surrounding areas or join us for a surf on Saturdays and church on Sundays. Friday nights are family movie or game night, Saturdays are usually spent at the beach and Sunday’s are Family days where we head to church and find a fun activity to do after.

Our home is open

We realise that the main difficulty with planning a volunteer trip abroad is finding a program that accommodates your budget and schedule. For this reason, we have decided not to operate on set cycles.

We accept volunteers all year round and partner with you to settle on a duration of time that works for your schedule, budget, and goals. With The GLO House, your volunteer experience is meaningful, personal and customisable. Contact us today to start planning the trip of a lifetime!
